There are two main reasons why a journalist would choose to cover a business.
The main reason is that the journalist believes the business will be able to provide something of interest to his audience.
A secondary reason is that the journalist hopes the business will be cooperative, which will make it easier for him to file a story by deadline.
To elaborate on the first reason, it’s important to remember that different media outlets have different audiences, and thus would want different things from your business.
National media report on national issues, so they might want to know how your business is dealing with a new tax or an immigration issue.
Local newspapers report on local issues, so they might be interested to learn about a new piece of machinery your business has installed or a donation it has made to a local cause.
Trade publications report on industry-specific issues, so they might want to know about the new technology your business has implemented or how it has responded to a new regulation.
